How well do you practice self-control?
If you're like me the most likely response is: it depends...with some things I do well, with other things not so much. The Bible has a lot to say about self-control. “So prepare your minds for action and exercise self-control. Put all your hope in the gracious salvation that will come to you when Jesus Christ is revealed to the world.” 1 Peter 1:13 NLT
I have come to realize true self-control comes down to one thing that we must do over and over again. We exercise self-control when we surrender control to the Lord. The act of surrender is really the ultimate choice of self-control.
“But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!” Galatians 5:22-23 NLT
It's the Holy Spirit within us who produces self-control, which means I must surrender control to Him in order to experience it. I need the willpower to surrender and the God power to sustain it.
“In view of all this, make every effort to respond to God’s promises. Supplement your faith with a generous provision of moral excellence, and moral excellence with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with patient endurance, and patient endurance with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love for everyone. The more you grow like this, the more productive and useful you will be in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.” 2 Peter 1:5-8 NLT
“He must become greater and greater, and I must become less and less.” John 3:30 NLT
