Expressions of love come in many different forms. A card, note, or letter…a phone call, conversation…all of these are expressions of love through words. Love is perhaps more often expressed through actions. Doing laundry, cleaning house, and preparing meals for your family…Working 40+ hours a week to provide food, clothing, and a home for those you love.
In 1 Thessalonians 1:2-3 Paul describes what he recalls about the church at Thessalonica: “We recall…your work produced by faith, your labor motivated by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.”
“Labor motivated by love”… expressions of love in word and deed
Some of the greatest examples of love that were ever heard or seen were expressed during the last week that Jesus walked this earth.
In Jesus’ prayer the night before He was crucified He prayed for you and me:
“I am praying not only for these disciples but also for all who will ever believe in me through their message. I pray that they will all be one, just as you and I are one—as you are in me, Father, and I am in you. And may they be in us so that the world will believe you sent me. I have given them the glory you gave me, so they may be one as we are one. I am in them and you are in me. May they experience such perfect unity that the world will know that you sent me and that you love them as much as you love me.” John 17:20-23
Look at the ways Jesus expressed His love for you and me…
Earlier in Jesus’ ministry He said:
“There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command.” John 15:13-14
“For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him.” John 3:16-17
