“Dear children, keep away from anything that might take God’s place in your hearts.” 1 John 5:21 NLT
It's hard to imagine that we would allow something or someone to take God's place in our hearts. God's place in our hearts should be a place that is central to our lives. It's a place where we have surrendered total control. Everything else in life should find its place in our hearts based on how it fits with God's will and His directions for us.
However, if we are not careful we can find ourselves taking control...taking God's place. “Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.” Proverbs 4:23 NLT
The question that we have to ask ourselves is: "What do I treasure most in life?" Because Jesus tells us “Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be.” Matthew 6:21 NLT.
Is God the treasure you most desire?
Perhaps you've heard the advice to just "follow your heart." Be certain that when you do, God is in His place.
“Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.” Proverbs 3:5-6 NLT
