“Dear children, keep away from anything that might take God’s place in your hearts.”1 John 5:21
How can we know when something threatens to take God’s place in our hearts? Often, it is a matter of consistently examining the priorities in our lives. Keeping God as the number one priority in life can easily be threatened by that which consumes our thoughts - our time - our resources.
Also, when we fail to worship or fail to stay in the Word of God we are opening ourselves to allowing something or someone else to take God’s place in our lives. “Yes, they knew God, but they wouldn’t worship him as God or even give him thanks. And they began to think up foolish ideas of what God was like. As a result, their minds became dark and confused. Claiming to be wise, they instead became utter fools. And instead of worshiping the glorious, ever-living God, they worshiped idols made to look like mere people and birds and animals and reptiles.” Romans 1:21-23
“And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.” Philippians 4:8
